What to expect with SPEAK OUT! therapy:
-
Click the link below and schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation to discuss your specific needs.
-
An evaluation will be completed to determine if you are a candidate for SPEAK OUT! therapy. Baseline measurements will be taken related to voice volume, breath support, vocal quality, and articulation. A treatment plan will be developed based on the assessment results.
-
You will receive a free hard copy of the SPEAK OUT! workbook after you have completed your evaluation.
You are also given free access to the “SPEAK OUT! e-Library.” This unique on-line library includes photo/word/math/conversation flashcards, as well as a songbook, and other therapy workbooks designed to support your progress!
-
Individual therapy is conducted two times per week. A typical SPEAK OUT! session consists of lots of conversation, vocal warmup, reading exercises, and a fun set of what I like to call brain puzzles. Each session lasts 30-45 minutes. Patients usually reach their SPEAK OUT! therapy goals in 8-12 individual therapy sessions.
-
You will complete SPEAK OUT! home practice exercises twice per day.
Since Parkinson’s is progressive and degenerative, daily home practice is a crucial part of the SPEAK OUT! program. Without setting this daily routine, you will not reach your full potential. You will also struggle to retain speech and swallowing abilities.
The Parkinson Voice Project hosts online SPEAK OUT! home practice sessions Monday thru Friday on its website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel. These free sessions are intended to keep daily home practice interesting and fun!
-
During the third or fourth week of therapy, you will become a member of a weekly online or in-person SPEAK OUT! group.
Group members share resources, hold one another accountable for completing daily exercises, and provide support and camaraderie.
-
Singing with INTENT is an effective vocal exercise. The Parkinson Voice Project hosts weekly online sing-alongs. Even if you don’t read music or think you have a musical voice, warm-up with an online SPEAK OUT! home practice session, and then join the group!
-
At the final individual SPEAK OUT! therapy session, your daily home maintenance exercise program will be discussed. A post-therapy video will be recorded and compared to the initial evaluation video. You will recieve a discharge summary, recommendations for the future, and a SPEAK OUT! refresher session will be scheduled for 4-6 weeks later.
-
The mission of Parkinson Voice Project is to help every person with Parkinson’s regain and retain speech and communication while minimizing swallowing complications. In other words, they want you to retain the improvements you’ve achieved for the rest of your life!
To accomplish this, you should have a “SPEAK OUT! Refresher” session 4-6 weeks after graduation and every 3-6 months after that. During these sessions, your current speech and swallowing skills will be compared to the level achieved during your SPEAK OUT! Therapy. Additional speech therapy sessions will be scheduled at this time if there has been a decline.
By having consistent “Refreshers,” speech and/or swallowing issues are addressed more quickly.
